The ascent of the Roman Republic as well as the creation and eventual decline of its resulting Empire has fascinated the Western mind since long before the foundations of our current systems of global governance and politics. It is well documented and its lessons can ‘rhyme’ with our current circumstances.
While I am not a professional historian and my academic bonafides don’t extend much further than some elective college courses in the Classics, I’ve long been fascinated with the period of time between the peak Empire and early Byzantine period. This period is often overlooked in favor of the late Republic or peak Empire. There are some incredible events and lessons that come from this time.
This website and accompanying channel will focus on the following facets of this period. They include:
- A compendium of all key events and sources from approximately 200 AD to 700 AD as it pertains to the Western and Eastern Empire.
- An identification of the key events and causes that led to the gradual decline and dissolution of the Western Empire.
- Taking the key causes and themes associated with the decline and determining if they apply to our modern system, specifically the United States of America.
While I have spent many hours researching this topic, I do not consider myself an expert. I welcome constructive feedback and am open to justified corrections. You can always reach me at [email protected]. I appreciate your visit and hope you find value in what is on this site.
