From the Mare Nostrum and beyond

From its humble beginning along the the Tiber to the vast expanse that spanned from Scotland to Mesopotamia Rome managed to govern many diverse people across many distinct geographies.  Over time this proved unsustainable and ultimately things wound down in Constantinople.  But it is a testament to its will and system that enabled it to thrive for as long as it did.
